Hampton House

A private oceanfront artist-designed 2-bedroom house overlooking the rugged Newfoundland coast. Situated on a winding oceanfront road at the edge of the historic town of Bonavista, Hampton House is an ideal base for enjoying the rugged Newfoundland outdoors. A traditional pitched roof saltbox built in 1926 and renovated in 2012, Hampton House is cosy and casually elegant, maintaining its original Newfoundland charm and character. Get away from it all in this lovely, quirky, history filled part of the world!

Hampton House is the perfect home away from home after enjoying adventures on the Bonavista Peninsula especially for those of you from abroad and staying one week or more. Perfect for the city travellers from St. John’s or those of you from Gander, the West Coast, etc. who just want some peace and quiet and even find the Trinity side way too busy these days. It’s for those of you seeking uniqueness. Initially planned as an Artist Retreat it’s still available for those of you on sabbatical. Please contact me privately for special long term rates.

The House is decorated in 50’s meets 60’s a bit of the 70’s and 2014 contemporary style. Authentic antique furniture, the timeless reproductions of early Canadiana/Quebec furniture hand built by Weller’s Antiques in Ontario (yup, that’s my dad) alongside unique flea market furniture finds from Europe and here in Newfoundland blend together to give Hampton House its uniqueness in design. Sustainability wherever possible is the design thread.

Sustainability wherever possible is the design thread. Quirky rebuilding and refinishing of old furniture, doors, fences etc. add to the originality of Hampton House and is the reason why the garage situated on the parcel of land is still standing. Still a “fixer upper” it is the next project.

Original art from many Canadian and European Artists adorn the walls, the photography of local artist, Chris Abbott can be bought directly from her studio in Bonavista. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you need. Fridge, microwave oven, as well as an apartment stove with oven to bake your blueberry pie after a day of picking. Dishes are done the old fashioned way! The laundry room has a washer and dryer, as well as an antique armoire for boots and outer clothing. There are 2 sets of raincoats and rain pants plus caps you are welcome to use for those many walks and hikes that you will most certainly want to take.

More Amenities

There are two ocean view bedrooms upstairs (one double, one twin and a pull out double sofa) a cozy reading nook for relaxing after a long day outdoors. The main bathroom downstairs has a shower/bathtub, upstairs is a large half bathroom and where extra linens, European duvets, pillows, towels are in ready supply for your use. Upon request you can have a housekeeping service come to your aid, they charge you directly and once a week the organic farmers drop by selling their fresh vegetables!

The million dollar view can be enjoyed from virtually any spot on the property, especially from the private picnic table on the oceanfront land I’m reclaiming as a wild meadow with Newfoundland flowers. Enjoy the unobstructed view, the sunsets, whales, icebergs, countless birds, especially when the fishing boats are returning from sea. Below the picnic table there is a campsite fireplace, perfect for bonfires, “brew ups” and for roasting marshmallows. I like to climb the flat rocks and sun myself inches from the ocean, listening to the wave’s crash on the rocks while lying in the sun, watching the clouds fly by high above.

The Area

Every summer the historical Garrick Theatre in Bonavista offers not only movies but also the wonderful Summer Music Series with Newfoundland’s finest musicians. Rising Tide Theatre in Trinity, Fisher’s Loft in Port Rexton for gourmet dining, the “secret” swimming hole in Keels, best pizza and moose burgers on the Rock at the Bonavista Social Club in Upper Amherst Cove. Take drawing, sketching or painting courses at One Mill Studio with Stephen Zeifman in Port Rexton, visit Two Rooms Art Projects and Contemporary Art in Duntara, the Random Passage set in New Bonaventure and Elliston, Root Cellar Capital of the World, home of the Puffin Festival and the Roots, Rants and Roars culinary event held every September.
